They say the victims represent three generations of a happy, tight-knit Mexican family.
Police were called to the 5700 block of South California Avenue at 1:05 p.m. for a well-being check after a man didn’t show up for work two days in a row. The officers on the scene could see a body from outside the residence, and entered the property to discover six bodies total.
Amongst the victims are a couple, their daughter, the woman’s two children and the woman’s brother, a relative told local TV station WGN.
At a news conference, Interim Chicago Police Chief John Escalante said there appeared to be “signs of trauma to the bodies.” He said the victims had yet to be identified, and that crime scene investigators were still collecting evidence.
While the Chicago Police 8th District has stepped up patrols in the area, Escalante said they do not believe there any threat to the surrounding community.
He said the investigation will take some time and that South California Avenue will be closed for some time this evening.
