Agents from the “Secretaría de Salud del Estado de Yucatán” (Ministry of Health of the State of Yucatan), through its “Dirección Contra Riesgos Sanitarios” (Office Against Health Risks), are imparting training to over 30 food retailers and restauranteurs in the port of Celestun in order to comply with health state regulations to avoid food contamination.
The business of preparing safe food for sale is something the State Health Department takes very seriously to keep the public safe, and through this course, valuable information is given which will help food handlers improve their skills and operations.
The training course was held at the “Casa de Cultura Municipal” (House of Culture of the municipality) and was attended by local authorities, restaurant owners and food handlers from Celestún and surrounding areas.
Among the course guidelines, were
- Prevention of food contamination
- Safe food handling procedures practices
- Personal Hygiene practices
It is also worth mentioning that a food vendors’ survey was performed for the first time in Celestún, in order to have a record of who and how many people in town is engaged in the food sale business. And this can make it easier for the state agency to offer courses and training for the improvement of services to national and international tourism.
