The German footwear brand Birkenstock launched a collection based on 100% Mexican designs.

With more than 230 years of experience in the fine art of shoemaking and knowledge gathered from one generation to the next, Birkenstock shoes exhibit the finest workmanship and utmost quality.

Their heritage as shoemakers reflects an environmental sensibility that continues to evolve and shape who they are as an environmentally responsible brand and company. Quality materials and low-waste production are pillars that continue to remain their very own core and standard.

In order to provide best-in-class products and service, Birkenstock hires quality and talented people who share their values of accountability, responsiveness, excellence, teamwork, respect and integrity.

The “Zapotec” line is part of the spring-summer 2016 collection of the company; each piece is hand painted by artisans from the “Jacobo y Maria alebrijes” workshop from San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca, Mexico and the objective is to support the local craft work.

Jacobo y Maria is a workshop with more than 25 years of experience, that preserves the unique talent inherited by artisanal knowledge of the Zapotec culture projected on their jewelry, wood carving, mounted in silver and, mainly, creating vivid designs and colorful “tonas” and “nahuales” fantastic zoomorphic creatures known as “alebrijes”.

The sales of the “Zapotec” Birkenstock collection products will be used to support the community of artisans from San Martin Tilcajete Oaxaca, and these items can only be acquired at Birkenstock stores in Mexico.

During the ceremony, Paul Rozada, CEO of the brand in Mexico, said this year they seek to promote the campaign “Birkenstock 365” that aims at the use of their brand 365 days a year, as they have created products designed for each season.

Birkenstock has 10 years in Mexico, and with this new 100% Mexican design line of footwear seeks to show its recognition for Mexican culture. The project consisted on the design of 100 different pairs of handmade sandals.
