On a scale of 1 to 100, Yucatan scored 49.69 points in the level of foreign language, in the international ranking of English Proficiency Index of Education First (EF EPI). About 30 percent of the Yucatecan population speaks this language.

The study was conducted during the first quarter of the year in Mexico, in various offices as well as schools and places that cater towards tourism, with the best score in the country achieved by Queretaro, with 54.72.

Most Mexican states recorded a basic English level in practice, although those with the worst results are the states of Chiapas, Tabasco and Nayarit.

Worldwide, there are about 1.5 billion people who speak English but only 375 million have this language as native, so at least three out of four of these people have English as a second language.

The test was conducted in 70 countries, and Mexico was ranked 40. The  top three were Sweden, Holland and Denmark.

Is English a true priority?

Factors influencing good performance in speech and comprehension of this language are the classes taught, the prevalence of music and film, and the phonetic and grammatical similarities between languages.

Mexico obtained a similar rating as countries such as Russia and Brazil, along with most Latin American countries.

In 2015, English was considered internationally as the main language, with just a few countries continuing to debate whether it is a priority to learn it or not.
