CANCUN — Residents of the Nordic countries can enjoy up to three months of vacation and make up a market segment with high purchasing power. (May is the only month they don’t travel.)
“A regular flight between Cancun and any Nordic nation, would finally detonate the Scandinavian market, tourists with 50 to 85 thousand dollars of annual income, and up to three months vacation a year,” said Jesus Almaguer Salazar, director general of the Convention and Visitors Bureau (OVC).
The office responsible for promoting Cancun and the “Treasures of the Caribbean” states that the Scandinavian market has great potential, so they are in negotiations with operators and airlines in the region to establish a regular route.
The people of Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Denmark and Norway always look for beach destinations such as Cancun, due to the cold weather that prevails in their region most of the year. Besides, they are interested in culture and gastronomy, making Cancun and the “Treasures of the Caribbean” the ideal location for their dream vacation.
“Mexico has a great gastronomic diversity, and the Yucatan Peninsula offers the most gorgeous beaches and incomparable archaeological sites, which place us far above the competition in terms of variety,” Almaguer Salazar said.
During the early 90s, there used to be 4 monthly flights from Finland, Denmark and Norway, and around 50 thousand tourists from Scandinavian countries used to visit Cancun every year.
According to the Cancun and Puerto Morelos Hotel Association (AHC), a total of 4,408 Scandinavian tourists arrived during the first quarter of 2016; 1,894 more than the same period last year. 2,825 tourists were from Sweden, 90 from Iceland and 683 from Norway, while the remaining 810 came from Finland and Denmark.
Thomson Airways announced direct flights to Cancun from Copenhagen, Denmark and Helsinki, Finland for the 2016-2017 winter holiday season, according to the international flights seasonal schedule of Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR).
Among other new direct flights to Cancun, there is Zurich, Switzerland, starting April 2017; and Interjet’s Cancun-New York (featuring a promotional price of $5,977 pesos, for the last four months of the year).
