Paradise turned into hell. Holbox island, a natural wonder of the Yucatan Peninsula, home for many animal, bird and marine species, has been taken as booty by the defenders of tourism development who intend to ignore the relevance of this kind of ecosystems.holbox

A few days ago there were reports of a wild fire in the island, which has been totally closed by environment Federal authorities until further notice.incendios4

But on Thursday September 22, it was confirmed that the fire in Holbox was provoked, according to a press release by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) after an air and land surveillance and  investigation operation by the Federal Agency, evidence of an intentional fire was found.

According to PROFEPA, the conclusion was that there were severe damages to the ecosystem so they requested the Environment and Natural Resources Secretary not to authorize the change of land usage permits in the zone where the fire took place, for the next twenty years, as the Sustainable Development General Law determines.holbox_dos

The most worrying thing of this matter is that those responsible for the fire will most likely get away with it, and according to the nature of the damages caused by the fire, it could have been started by people who are interested in preparing the land to build tourist developments.
