CANCUN — After welcoming more than 5 million visitors in 2015, Cancun is once again on pace for another record-breaking year in arrivals. According to statistics recently released by the Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), the destination tallied a 2 percent visitor increase between January and May compared to that same period last year.

Cancun CVB authorities anticipate that the addition of new attractions, restaurants and hotels will fuel continued growth to tack onto the 2,937,949 travelers arriving during that January-May period.

Garnering more visitors annually than any other Mexico tourist destination, the Caribbean Sea redsort in Quintana Roo State is lauded for its inspiring beauty, gorgeous beaches, brilliant turquoise waters and engaging culture. Also adding appeal is Cancun’s multiple product options that include Puerto Morelos, plus the “Treasures of the Caribbean” islands of Holbox, Isla Mujeres and Contoy.

“The destination continues to evolve year after year, always offering visitors fresh reasons to come back again and again,” said Jesus Almaguer, CEO of the Cancun CVB. “Cancun’s constant commitment to the expansion and diversification of its tourism offerings will lead the city into yet another record-breaking year in arrivals.”

Those impressive January-May 2016 numbers show that U.S. arrivals were up five percent, hitting an all-time high of 1,057,999. Other countries contributing to the top sources of visitors were:

  • Great Britain – 49,918
  • Argentina – 29,575
  • Brazil – 28,054
  • Colombia – 21,540

Fresh Airlift

No doubt the August 2016 lifting of flight restrictions by the Mexican and U.S. governments will open the door to additional travel options and competitive airfares. Carriers quick to bolster service to previously unserved cities include:

  • Sunwing Vacations weekly service from Kelowna, B.C. on Sundays from Nov. 6, 2016-April 9, 2017.
  • Southwest Airlines daily non-stop service from Los Angeles beginning Dec. 4, 2016.
  • Delta Airlines daily non-stop service from JFK New York beginning Dec. 17, 2016.
  • Vacation Express Friday non-stop service from Tampa beginning March 19, 2017.
