The wide tourist offer as well as the commercial strategy for the national and international markets will allow Mérida and the state of Yucatán to reach historical figures by the end of the year.
“Indicators show that cruise and sport tourism, demand for flights, revenue at archeological zones and hotel occupancy have grown significantly compared to the previous year”, says Saúl Ancona Salazar, state secretary of Tourism Promotion.
In this sense, 1,303,686 visitors have spent at least one night in the state from January to November of 2016, and this statistic will certainly increase during the month of December.
In addition, the official mentioned several recognitions that reflect important achievements for Mérida in 2016:
- Best Destination of Congresses and Conventions, awarded by “Convenciones de Latinoamérica” magazine.
- Best Gourmet Destination, endorsed by Food and Travel.
- Best Destination to Visit, recommended by Travel and Leisure.
The “White City” was placed among the 10 best places in the world to visit in 2017, by the prestigious Lonely Planet magazine with almost 10 million queries per month. Mérida shares this distinction with Bordeaux, France; Cape Town, South Africa; Pistoia, Italy; Ohrid, Macedonia, and Lisbon, Portugal, among other cities.
“All this is possible thanks to the coordinated work, synergies, strategies and alliances that exist between the State and Federal Governments with local service providers in the tourism sector,” emphasized the head of the Ministry of Tourism Development (Secretaría de Fomento al Turismo: Sefotur).
The accumulated movement of passengers in the International Airport of the City of Merida “Manuel Crescencio Rejón” for the period January-November 2016 increased by 16.7 percent, to reach a total number of 1,756,725 passengers during the first eleven months of the year.
