Six alleged operatives of two rival drug cartels were arrested over the weekend by federal security forces in Cancún and Playa del Carmen.

In Cancun, Federal Police arrested two presumed local leaders of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación while they were traveling in a luxury sport vehicle, in which police found firearms. The two detainees were identified as cartel operatives from Puerto Vallarta and Zapopan, Jalisco.

In Playa del Carmen, four presumed members of Los Zetas were arrested as they were collecting extortion money from a bar, according to state officials. Authorities said five other alleged Zetas escaped.

In this operation, the Army was aided by federal, state and tourism police in a force that was about 80-strong.

Violence flared in Playa del Carmen January 16 when a gunman began firing during a music festival at the Blue Parrot bar, in which six people were killed and 15 wounded.

Authorities are investigating if any of the detainees may have ties to the Blue Parrot incident or a subsequent attack on the state Attorney General’s office in Cancun, in which four people died.
