The company will invest about $62 million USD in brand new recreational and cultural development.
CANCUN — The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) authorized construction and operation of a “Recreational and Cultural Center” at Xcaret. The validity of the permit is between 20 and 30 years.
This project will need an investment of around $62 million dollars and will be located around the emblematic ecotourism park, less than 10 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen.
This building will complement another project in Xcaret: construction of a hotel of about six thousand rooms, with an investment of around one million$1.7 million. It is expected that this hotel will open later on this year.
On March 4, in the Ecological Gazette of Semarnat, the approval of the “Recreational and Cultural Center” project was made official. Xcaret had sought approval for almost a year when it issued the environmental impact statement before the federal agency.
However, after announcing its intentions and the management of the permits, it was submitted to public consultation in March 2016 and rejected in June; nevertheless in October of that same year it returned to consultation and finally, on March 4, its approval was announced.
What is the project?
Among the many features of the project, a construction of a stadium is highlighted, which will serve to host sporting and cultural events. The Center will also have recreational areas with swimming pools, tennis courts, parking lots and gardens.
It is estimated that the lifetime of the Center will be about 100 years after its construction, for which hiring about 500 workers will be required.
During the period of work, the vegetation of subperennifolia forest will be removed, but a recovery program will be carried out in the surroundings where both flora and fauna species will be located.
