ISLA HOLBOX, Q. Roo — Carlos Gosselin Maurel, president of the Cancun and Puerto Morelos Hotel Association (AHC), lamented the strong environmental damage affecting the island of Holbox and asked environmental authorities of all government levels, as well as business people, to work together on doing something to aid the collapsing island.
Holbox is suffering from severe environmental problems due to poor management of organic waste and sewage. “The ones causing the problem are the buisnessmen who push the environment to its limit by making more hotels and restaurants without proper regulation. Holbox cannot continue like this”, stated Gosselin Maurel.
Tourist industry businessmen, and state and municipal authorities, are constantly talking about sustainability; developing a bonding with nature. However, those intentions apparently do not apply to Holbox.
The leader of the hoteliers in the northern area of Quintana Roo considered that the environmental situation the island is facing should be urgently addressed not only by the government, but also by the business sector in the area. “You have to take decisive measures; everyone must get involved to solve this issue.”
Carlos Gosselin considered that the contamination of Holbox also affects Quintana Roo, especially on the image it portrays to the touristic sector. Therefore, it is crucial that everyone participating in the issue agrees to stop this environmental destruction.
