COMMENT: Mérida becomes the capital of failed events nationwide

Earlier this year, Mérida was recently designated as “American Capital of Culture” with the objective of promoting its culture, gastronomic offering and lifestyle through a wide array of cultural and artistic events.

However, something is really wrong in the latest celebrations as many have been a huge mess caused by their organizers, weather or even weird circumstances that suddenly appeared.

Let’s talk about these disastrous situations here:

  • Playboy Music Fest Mérida

On the night of Friday June 30, hundreds of Meridanos thought they would be enjoying an unforgettable party – probably the party of their lives — featuring 110 “Playmates”, Jacuzzis full of these beautiful models, marvelous music and liters of alcohol… however, that was far from reality. The event was a huge mess because the “Playmates” were only locals as the National Migration Institute (INM) arrested three foreign “Bunnies” without work permits, halting the party in its tracks.

Sorry men, next time you should go to Mahaual to enjoy a real Playboy Party.

  • Magicon 2017

Meridano “Potterheads” were really excited when they heard about a new magical event, a promised meeting as if they were at Hogwarts. The organizing committee promised a convention with the Harry Potter saga’s atmosphere where Yucatecan wizards would be playing Quidditch, enchanting each and every one, taking pictures with owls, among other activities… It was a complete disaster, though, as there were no thematic decorations, no food, no wizards, and activities were even cancelled. On conclusion, the organizing committee made attendees’ money disappear like wizards, the only real spell that was cast…

  • International Festival of Culture and Art “El Globo en Yucatan”

So far, this festival takes the crown as “the most failed event nationwide”.

On January 20, 2017 the hot air balloon fest took place at “Autódromo de Yucatán” with serious shortcomings such as the number of balloons and the impossibility to rise them up, and lack of places to sit. The road toward the entrance was even under construction, creating a traffic jam never seen before in Yucatán. Eventually, León, Guanajuato keeps hosting the best Hot Air Balloon in our country.

  • “Festival Sonoro” Mérida 2016

Another failed event in Mérida — it didn’t occur — was the “Festival Sonoro” which would be one of the most important music fests nationwide. Music groups like “OV7”, “Kabah”, “Belanova” and “Los Claxons” would be performing in the first date. Meanwhile, in the second event in late 2016, Espinoza Paz and “La banda Cuisillos” would be participating.

The original plan was scheduled to end with the presentation of the legendary band “Caifanes”, accompanied by “Víctimas del Dr. Cerebro”, “Plastilina Mosh” and “La Lupita”.

The event was cancelled due to internal reasons.

  • Other festivals

Finally, I can tell you of an infinite list of wasted events in the white city during the latest years, such as the concert of Luis Miguel (he was too drunk to perform that day), and other international music groups like PLACEBO and LIMP BIZKIT also cancelled at Coliseo Yucatán where people were standing in line for hours, only to find out that the show was not happening.

Other cancelled fests are: the International Festival of Lights “FILUX” that only featured a few attractions, and the latest Noche Blanca that was partially suspended by a rainstorm.
