The business tourism sector in Quintana Roo has grown steadily over the last year….

CANCÚN — The business tourism industry has shown a significant growth this year rising more than 6% compared to 2016, reported Cristina Rosado Guerrero, Manager of Public Relations for Latin America and Asia of the Office of Visitors and Conventions (OVC).

“A business visitor features a high purchasing power, as they spend an average of up to two thousand dollars per person, and besides they don’t only work and have meetings here but they also play golf and go shopping in our luxury malls”, Rosado Guerrero said.

The manager continued: “There are dozens of business meetings scheduled until 2020 at the Cancun International Convention Center, including expos, conventions, business fairs and other kinds of gatherings”.

“Medical and business conventions are already scheduled all the way to the year 2020, and there are also architecture meetings that are held every year”, she said.

Depending on the type of event, the number of attendants fluctuate between 100 and 3,000. And considering that there are about three thousand events per year at different venues such as the Cancun’s convention center, other hotels and the Moon Palace, which also hosts events of international level, the economic spill is very significant.

“We also have important events where distinguished celebrities and even the Mexican president attend, on average, there are five of these a year, and they generate up to five thousand visitors each”, she continued.

According to the state’s Secretariat of Tourism, last year Cancun and Riviera Maya were national benchmark in the business tourism sector with an economic impact of $242.7 million dollars.

Cancun currently has two large convention centers and the Riviera Maya has 42 hotels with a total 23,667 meeting rooms that are frequently occupied by staff members of the pharmaceutical and medical industries, science and technology sector, automotive industry, religious groups, as well as education and sports institutions, which usually hold their business meetings, conventions or fairs in our beautiful state of Quintana Roo.

Last year these destinations received 361,156 business-tourists, mostly Mexican nationals with 54.2% and the rest coming from the U.S.

“In 2016 meeting tourism involved 52.8% tours, 39.7% commercial places, 33.9% restaurants and 23.4% bars as complementary services. Hence the importance of strengthening this industry and generating conditions for tourism is to generate benefits for the people and contribute to reduce the inequalities that historically the state has suffered”, Marisol Vanegas Perez, Secretary of Tourism concluded.

Alongside Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Merida, Puebla, Monterrey and Puerto Vallarta are the Mexican destinations that are in the world ranking of cities that held International Conventions during last year, according to the International Association of Groups and Conventions.
