The City Council wants to increase the planting of trees to improve Merida’s environment….
“We are working on planting more trees to improve the weather in the city and to keep the streets attractive”. said Sayda Melina Rodríguez Gómez, Director of the Merida’s Department of Sustainable Development.
She also added that there are urban sectors such as the Mexico Colony where the reforestation works are limited to the colony park due to the lack of public green spaces in the streets.
The City Council is concerned about the quality of the environment in Merida, so they want to improve the climate in the city by increasing the quantity of trees, with the aim of reducing the over-warming sensation, that the city always has, and also it will help to improve the quality of the air by transforming the pollution produced by vehicles in oxygen.
The selection of trees to be planted in the city are the result of an exhaustive research led by the Yucatan Scientific Research Center (CICY), which owns a greenhouse with a huge variety of vegetal species approved for growth in the region, that guaranties to keep the integrity of the streets and that the trees will provide shade for the people.
This is part of the Green Infrastructure Municipal Development Plan from the current Mayor Mauricio Vila Dosal.
