MERIDA — The construction of two new road distributors for Merida’s peripheral expressway, the construction of a road distributor for the municipality of Baca and another one for the crossing of Cholul-Sitpach, as well as the modernization of the last 50 kilometers of the Merida-Chetumal highway, make up the main projects for Yucatan that the federal Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) listed for the 2018 budget before the Chamber of Deputies for an amount of 1.400 billion pesos, 200 million more compared to the 2017 investment.

The head of the Federal agency, Jorge Montaño Michael, said that in parallel, projects for the modernization of feeder roads are being prepared in coordination with the State Government, and that the budgeted projects also include the modernization of the Tizimín-Rio Lagartos highway.

“For 2018 we have in the portfolio of projects several works that we have been managing since previous years. In order to make a road we have to do the studies, the executive projects, take the permits from the Environment and Natural Resources Secretariat (Semarnat) and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), also we have to put together a series of elements so that a work can be carried out.

Regarding the Merida-Chetumal highway, Montaño Michael said that this year will conclude 70 kilometers of modernization from two to four lanes, and that are a little more than 50 kilometers for expansion of the roadway from nine to 12 meters within the limits of Yucatan.

“Another project is to continue with the modernization of the Merida Peripheral Road, we hope to begin the work of modernization of the highway distributor that is at the exit to Progreso, which is one of the first to be made. We have to finish shoulders, half are missing, some 50 kilometers of shoulders in the peripheral road, we will need two road distributors like Chenkú, and think about the rehabilitation of the asphaltic surface of some areas of the road.

As for the Baca road distributor, the federal official said that the project has already been registered with the Ministry of Finance, while studies are already underway for the construction of the Cholul-Sitpach junction. As will be recalled, in early September there will be submitted to the Chamber of Deputies the draft budget of expenditure for roadways for 2018.
