A work group will be installed in the island to work on solutions to demands from entrepreneurs and the population….

CANCUN — More than 20 years have passed since the island of Holbox became a tourist paradise.

Now State authorities and residents have set up the Committee for Sustainable Tourism Development of Holbox, which was held on Monday August 15 and aims to start generating projects together that lead to the preservation of the Yum Balam Reserve and to the sustainability of the island.

Holbox has been facing problems of garbage, sewage, lack of potable water and electric failures in recent months due to inadequate planning by former officials, said Alejandría Selem, a member of the Holbox Hotels Association.

Hoteliers and residents of Holbox met with officials of the Secretary of State Tourism (Sedetur), Secretariat of Infrastructure and Transport (Sintra), Water and Sewerage Commission (CAPA) and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) with the aim of laying the foundations and priorities for the creation of a sustainable tourism project.

At the meeting, Marisol Venegas, head of Sedetur, advanced several works in Chiquilá, key port for arrivals to Holbox, which will aim to endow the port with attractiveness, aiming to create, in the future, a lodging center for tourists.

It detailed the construction of the Tourist Center of Chiquilá, which will have at least one palapa and provide tourist services, a space for the sale of handicrafts from local people, as well as the improvement of the court at the children’s playground and the gazebo. Also to be provided are a dome of sanitary services, office area and tourist information for the use of all, with an estimated construction cost of at least 12 million pesos.
