Carlos Peralta Quintero, former owner of the Quintana Roo Tigres baseball franchise, which was owned by his family for 62 years, announced that his company Grupo IUSA will invest $840 million USD in the construction of Amikoo Amusement Park in the Riviera Maya.
This is the most ambitious project for Quintana Roo at the end of presidential term of Enrique Peña Nieto and the most important in the beginning of the administration of Carlos Joaquín González as governor of Quintana Roo.
The presentation of the project was made in a special ceremony held at the official residence of Los Pinos, in the country’s capital, headed by Peña Nieto, along with his Secretary of Tourism, Enrique de la Madrid Cordero, the businessman Peralta Quintero, and Carlos Joaquin, the governor of Quintana Roo.
According to details of the project that were released on Monday September 18, the private investment is above $840 million USD, which between 2018 and 2020, will generate 9 thousand direct jobs, and 36 thousand indirect, for the State.
Along with the theme park that, due to its size and attractions will be the most important in Latin America, the project will also include a hotel with 1,200 rooms and a convention center.
In his speech, Governor Carlos Joaquín stressed the importance of maintaining the confidence of national investors for the development of projects of this magnitude, which allow the state to maintain its tourism potential, as the destination of great attractiveness to foreign and national visitors.
In addition, he assured that with this project they want to preserve the huge foreign exchange influx generated by the tourists, while the creation of 9,000 direct jobs and around 36,000 indirect ones. These jobs will be better paid and will reduce the great inequalities that today experiences Quintana Roo, the officials said.
In turn, President Peña Nieto said that the development of projects such as AMIKOO has allowed Mexico to reach record figures in foreign exchange earnings of the tourist sector, achieving in 2016 more than $19.5 billion USD.
Peralta Quintero said that AMIKOO will be the first park developed by talent and investment 100% Mexican, being respectful with the environment, preserving 85 of the 120 hectares contemplated by the project.
He said that the entertainment center includes, among others, a museum of archeology and Maya anthropology, an underwater anthropology room, and multimedia rooms, an artificial beach with a wave pool, and an underwater scientific expedition simulator.
Likewise, he reiterated that the development of new theme parks allows to the region to consolidate Quintana Roo as a destination rich in entertainment options, protecting the environment, and showing cultural and gastronomic charms.
