Despite heavy investments made by the State and Federal Governments, organized crime continues to operate in the south of Campeche….

CAMPECHE — Despite millions of pesos invested in patrols, armaments and personnel, the security of the inhabitants of Campeche is not being guaranteed, said the state head of the Work Party (Partido del Tabajo, PT in Spanish).

Antonio Gómez Saucedo said it is apparent that in the south of Campeche (near the Guatemala border) organized crime groups continue to operate, as was proven by the latest seizures that took place last week.

The PT leader stated that the local and national press reported the seizure of an important shipment of marijuana in Escárcega, one of the most southern municipalities of the entity where organized crime continues to operate with all impunity, despite the fact that the State Government and the Federation affirm to fight the delinquents in a determined form.

The leader of the PT stated that the placement of police checkpoints is not enough to solve the problem of drug trafficking, in addition to that they were removed from inter-state borders (with Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Tabasco), which could be affecting a free operation of the offenders.

He considered that the border with Central America requires a special procedure of coordination with the Federation, mainly in the frontier with Guatemala, since it is presumed that through this site, currently almost depopulated, pass drugs and undocumented people.

Although millions of pesos in government resources have been invested in the SSP during these two years of state administration, it has not been possible to change the perception of the Campeche inhabitants that in the State the presence of organized crime continues to increase.

Gomez Saucedo urged authorities to take measures to preserve the security of the people, including to reactivate police checkpoints, especially in areas of importance such as the border with other states and even Guatemala, where it is presumed drugs and undocumented persons are entering, said the PT politician.

The drug that is most trafficked on the southern border is marijuana, although eventually there are also cocaine seizures. Regarding the flow of undocumented migrants, we know of the sporadic operation of some cells, although the volume of migrants is not as high as that recorded in Chiapas and Tabasco.
