Cenote-cleaning projects will help preserve Yucatan’s water supply

State officials undertake the cleaning of more than 70 cenotes in Abalá, while a private entrepreneur is cleaning other cenotes around the state….

YUCATAN –  The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), Carlos Berlin Montero, as well Governor Rolando Zapata Bello, have started a project to clean the cenotes that provides water supply and tourism attractions for the community of Abalá.

Abalá’s Mayor Azael Ayala Sosa mentioned that along with the cleaning of the cenotes, as well as the eradication of the contamination of the subsoil, a comprehensive ecological restoration and conservation program has been created that began in Abalá and will be applied to the whole state, not only in the places where these bodies of water are, but also in cities and towns without them.

He stressed that the collaboration agreement between federal, state and municipal authorities, as well the civil organizations and companies interested in a better environment, will not be forgotten. Finally, he said that in Abalá there is a permanent cleaning brigade consisting of eight elements that are dedicated to the town and cenotes cleaning.

Abalá’s is not the only cenote cleaning project in the state. There is also a private initiative that is already working to preserve this huge water resource, according to Sergio Grosjean Abhimeri, CEO of Expeditions Grosjean. He estimated that there are 2,800 cenotes in Yucatán, of which 40 require urgent cleaning because they have tons of garbage.

The businessman, who also practice diving in cenotes, reported that with the support of the Bepensa Foundation, they have already cleaned 17 cenotes in the state.

They scheduled for Saturday November 25 to carry out a complete rescue of the cenote de Uayma, with the participation of several groups from Valladolid.
