COZUMEL, Q.Roo — Harsh winds and unsteady waters were the cause of a glass-bottomed boat cracking off the island of Cozumel Wednesday Dec. 13.
Riviera-maya-news.com reported the glass-bottom boat tour sank when the bottom of the boat cracked and eventually gave way due to harsh winds and strong waves caused by the most recent cold front to hit the region. The tourist sightseeing boat, Sharky, began taking on water with both tourists and crew on board.
Port Authorities received a request for help by the boat’s captain. An emergency crew was sent to help those on board the sinking vessel. While waiting, captain of Sharky made his way to the nearest dock at Hotel Cozumel and Resort where all on board disembarked without incident.
The glass-bottomed boat did eventually sink but was recovered and towed to the Fonatur Marina to verify damages.
There were no reports of injuries.
