Mérida, Yucatán.- “The Cenote-cleaning program that seeks to rescue the natural resources of Yucatan, in charge of the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat) will continue this year, with a number of sites identified in the list”, stated Carlos Berlín Montero, head of the department.
This program will also include strategies to generate social awareness among the local population.
“During the first days of January, we already have cleaned two important cenotes, following up the work done during 2017 across the state of Yucatan”, he said.
In 2017, the Semarnat in coordination with divers, volunteers and municipal authorities achieved the cleaning and rescue of 32 cenotes within the state, removing hazardous chemical waste, garbage, plastic and other pollutants.
“These cenotes represent 32 calls of attention, 32 acts of generating environmental awareness, 32 reminders of the importance of taking care of our water table, of keeping our sites healthy to increase the tourism but also to preserve the good quality of our water,” Berlín Montero said.
According to SEMARNAT, the intention is to maintain the rhythm of last year, and clean up a good number of cenotes that already show high levels of pollution.
