Ferry explosion in Playa del Carmen leaves 18 injured

On Wednesday February 21, there was an explosion on a ferry property of the “Barcos Caribe” transportation company, in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo. 18 resulted injured (none of them seriously), and the cause of the incident is still unknown.

The emergency services of the municipality of Solidaridad reported 18 people injured after the explosion recorded this afternoon in a boat docked at the pier of Playa del Carmen, municipal authorities reported.

The municipal government report indicates that the explosion occurred as passengers were getting off the boat at Solidaridad’s fiscal pier, and later on it was said the cause of the explosion was due to lack of maintenance on the boat’s engine.

In a communiqué, Solidaridad City Council announced that the respective protocols were activated by Civil Protection, Fire Department, Life Guard and Public Safety, in coordination with Playa del Carmen’s Port Authority, State Police and the Secretariat of the Navy, to attend the explosion report of a ferry from the company “Barcos Caribe”.

It was indicated that the municipal president of Solidarity, Cristina Torres Gómez, as well as the corresponding authorities went to the area for the immediate attention of the injured persons and their families.

It is worth mentioning that the “Barcos Caribe” transportation company is property of Roberto Borge Angulo, the former governor of Quintana Roo who is currently imprisoned on corruption charges.
