New prison facility to be built in Quintana Roo

The State Secretary of Public Safety, Rodolfo del Angel Campos, said that an investment of 2 billion pesos is being sought for a new prison facility, as a measure to deal with the deficiencies of detention centers all over the state. The new prison would be located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and will provide a solution to the overcrowding of penitentiary centers in Chetumal. The secretary said that the Executive Project has been already presented.

In this regard the head of the Security in the state said that it is a project that has important progress because it seeks to solve different problems that arise in prison centers in Cancun and the municipality of Othon P. Blanco.

He mentioned that this prison center is located between the municipalities of Benito Juárez and Solidaridad, with an strategic location required for the transfer of the inmates to the different courts so they can continue with their criminal procedures.

He also explained that most of the prison population is in the northern part of the state, but this new detention center will also serve to address the overcrowding situation that prevails at Chetumal’s Center for Social Reintegration (CERESO).

Del Angel Campos recalled that when the administration of the penitentiary system was received there were serious deficiencies, flaws and a lack of important investment.

Finally, the State Secretary of Public Safety underlined that this project is expected to be approved during the first semester of this year, but pointed out that besides the investment for construction there are other needs such as equipment and training for the prison personnel.
