Regarding his first meeting as president with his Mexican counterpart, Donald Trump said he “absolutely” intends for Mexico to pay for the controversial wall he wants to build along the United States’ southern border.
Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto met on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in 2017, amid sharp disagreements over trade and immigration. Some officials had hoped the brief encounter could help heal badly soured relations between the two neighbors.
Issues including trade, security, energy and migration have been discussed by American and Mexican officials so that Trump and Peña Nieto can “revise the progress of their teams and address pending issues” in this bilateral relationship once a final meeting date is set.
The White House did not set a date but said the meeting would occur in the “near future” and the arrangements were underway.
