Specialists and researchers seek the protection and preservation of the intangible heritage of Maya architectural knowledge, which currently has been being “replaced”.
According to a bulletin of the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), this work is done with the Mexican National Committee of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (Icomos).
Emphasizes that the UADY is the first university that seeks to promote and revalue the tablado that is built in towns of the State, as well as Maya housing style, which are the main expressions of current Yucatecan architecture.
For this initiative, Icomos México AC acknowledged the UADY as a pioneer in solidarity to preserve and spread the principles of conservation of Maya architectural heritage.
In this regard, the coordinator of the UADY’s Social Sciences Unit of CIR “Hideyo Noguchi”, Aurelio Sánchez Suárez, informed that the tablados, preservers of ancestral constructive knowledge, are at risk because they are being replaced.
“The objective is to enrich and formalize the proposal for a declaration before the State Congress” said the also member of the Scientific Committees of Icomos.
He recalled that within its principles is “that any construction made of wood that is relevant to the identity of peoples, cultures and that is built in relation to socio-cultural activities, should be considered heritage.
