Yucatan is the main producer and exporter of honey in all of Mexico. This activity fulfills an important socio-economic function, in which more than 11,000 producers participate.
The quality and flavor of the honey produced in Yucatan conquers international markets, where, as in other states, good practices are carried out to ensure the quality and safety of its product. Therefore, honey produced in Mexico is one of the most sought and demaded in the world.
Following an invitation, the Delegate of SAGARPA in Yucatan, visited the company “Mimiel”, where they observed the good manufacturing practices of honey, which allows to market this food to the European Union, mainly.
When giving detail of “Mimiel”, Miguel Peón Medina, owner of the company, said that the plant has the facilities, design of construction as well as the proper equipment and personnel to apply the sanitation programs (POES) and risk analysis (HACCP), necessary to guarantee the innocuousness of honey.
He added that “Mi Miel” is a leader in the State in the manufacturing and packaging of honey, their product is sold in supermarkets in the Peninsula, it currently has marketing agreements with important self-service chains, and for the last 4 years it has been involved in the export of honey in bulk to Germany.
It is worth mentioning that the value of honey production in Mexico currently exceeds 2.5 billion pesos a year, with a production of more than 70 thousand tons annnually, other states with higher production of this sweetener in the country are Campeche, Jalisco, Chiapas, and Veracruz.
The main buyers of Mexican honey in the world are highly consumer countries such as Germany, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Japan and Spain, among others, who prefer the taste and quality of this Mexican product.
