On April 30, the former mayor of Merida, Renán Barrera Concha, assured that the public policies of creating what he called the “great lung of Mérida” represent 20 percent of the green areas that will benefit more than 56,000 homes in the neighborhoods of Nora Quintana, Yucalpetén, La Magdalena, Xoclán Susulá, and Ciudad Caucel, just to name a few.
The axis of sustainability, one of the six presented by Renán Barrera, in addition to contemplating the planting of 100,000 more trees in the city, includes the recovery of approximately 973,560 trees that will result in an updated, generous and inclusive vision in the medium and long term of the city, that will contribute to improve the quality of life of the Méridanos.
“We are talking about the great lung of Mérida that we propose to promote in the west of the city, it will be a maximum trigger to help improve the quality of the air that all Meridanos breathe,” he said.
The common candidate of the PAN and Movimiento Ciudadano indicated that, with the increase of oxygen and the reduction of carbon dioxide, a positive change will come for the health of the meridanos who will enjoy a cleaner air and a sustainable urban development.
Recently, Renan Barrera presented his proposal of “sustainable growth” which includes more green areas and spaces for the enjoyment of the meridanos through an interconnected system of parks, and the rehabilitation of the ecological archaeological park Xoclán.
Barrera Concha, who wants to be mayor for second time, indicated that investment in infrastructure will ensure greater lighting in recreational sites, as well as walkers for those who enjoy doing sports activities or seek to get away from stress; rest areas, walking and biking trails, camping areas, viewpoints, suspension bridges, rappelling and zip lines will be part of this project.
The candidate for mayor of Mérida insisted that the coordinated work between society and government and the support of specialists in the subject, will manage to maintain the levels of air quality, water and reduce the generation of waste and greenhouse effect gases.
