Mountains of trash in the docks of Yucalpetén

The efforts to keep Yucalpetén’s harbor clean are often inefficient, since once it is cleaned up, it becomes dirty and full of trash again in a matter of days.

Many cleaning programs have passed through this area, but unfortunately the mountains of waste are still dangerously polluting the coast, including highly toxic inorganic material such as tires and fuel residues that end up in the sea.

The owners of the boats say that the cleanup corresponds to the Integral Port Administration (Administración Portuaria Integral: API), so it is urgent that measures are taken in this regard and that the local Marina (Puerto de Abrigo) be provided with adequate maintenance.

In a tour of the area it can be observed that the fishermen perform multiple activities right there on the docks, that could cause an accident, such as welding and cutting.

Residents recommend that in case that the API cannot handle the situation and keep the docks clean, it should issue a call for tenders, inviting private companies to bid, so they can take charge of the cleaning and waste treatment.

Everyone agreed that both the owners of the boats and the fishermen have to do their job to make the Puerto de Abrigo clean, for the health and safety of their families and to save our oceans.
