103 suicides in Yucatán so far in 2018

MÉRIDA, Yucatán.- Up to the May 31st, 102 suicides have occurred in Yucatán, which represents an increase of 21% in relation to the 84 cases registered during the same period in 2017.

In the first five days of June there was also a case of self-inflicted death, the ex school teacher Martin, 62 years old, who decided to hang himself at his home in the city of Ticul, in the south of the state.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, in January there were 13 suicides, on February 27, on March 24, on April 22 and May 16 for a total of 102 self-inflicted deaths in the first five months of 2018, that is one suicide every two days in the state.

In 2017, the figures were 18 suicides in January, 9 in February, 16 in March, 17 in April and 24 in May.

In this year of the 102 suicides, 85 are men and 17 women. Three suicides have also been registered in children.
The method of hanging is the most used in Yucatan, with 90 cases, 10 more by poisoning and two more by other means.

Mérida is the municipality with the highest incidence with 46 self-inflicted deaths, in second place is Kanasín with 8 cases, in third Umán with 6, followed by Tecoh with five, then Clestún, Hunucmá, Progreso and Valladolid, with two events of this type, plus of 29 other cases, registered in other parts of the state.

According to the Mental Health Unit of the Secretary of State Health, depression is the main factor that triggers suicide in Yucatán. Economic problems, terminal illnesses and addiction problems are some of the common denominators in most of these cases.
