The ten Water Reserve Decrees published on June 6 in the Official Gazette of the Federation in no way grant benefits for only one person or one group, organization or company; on the contrary, these decress were made with the purpose of preserving the environment and to guarantee water for human consumption of 18 million inhabitants that are not yet born, in a 50-year projection.

With these decrees, 295 of the 757 watersheds of the country will have to preserve their ecosystems exactly in the conditions that we know today, thanks to which the water level in rivers will be guaranteed, since the main water generators are precisely these important ecosystems.

Before the decrees were made, a long process was carried out in which different social actors participated, represented in the “Consejos de Cuenca” (Basin Councils), in order to make use of the existing water availability in the river basins involved and to allocate it exclusively for the population and preservation of the environment,  as established in the decrees.

In the same sense, it is expected that the water reserve can help to mitigate climate change, and emblematic places that are not found anywhere else on the planet will be conserved, such as the Selva Lacandona in Chiapas and there will be no affectation the rights and concessions of other users, making good use of the available water.

This type of water care measures are recommendations made to countries by international organizations such as the International Water Resources Association and the World Resources Institute, to seek to preserve the vital liquid.

These organizations recommend that at least 35% of the annual average water supply, must be reserved for the population’s consumption and for the care of the environment.

With the measures adopted, Mexico exceeds by 12%, the international recommendations regarding the volume of water associated with ecological flow, with which we are being more environmentally oriented than many so-called “first world” countries.

The water reserve decrees are the most important public policies of the current administration because, contrary to rumors, they are instruments that guarantee water for the future supply of the population and for the preservation of fragile ecosystems in our country.

In conclusion, the decreed water reserves seek to ensure that the water available in the river basins throughout the country, must be kept for future generations and for the care of the environment.  This clearly explains that water will be used solely for environmental and human consumption purposes, and any different or contrary interpretation only seeks to disorient and misinform the population.
