With the aim of protecting the birds of Yucatan, as well as raising awareness about other issues that involve society, the Xantholora Foundation was created approximately two years ago.
Mariana Quesada, member of the organization, said that through the Facebook page (Xantholora AC) she and her colleagues are dedicated to attend reports of injured or abused birds, impacting our society in a positive way.
The institution that at the moment does not have a fixed establishment, has three axes:
- First: biodiversity affectation
- Second; to rescue wild fauna and liberate wild animals (such as parrots and other protected species).
- Third: to rescue injured birds in critical situations.
Quesada said that the project has scarce resources and lack of support from government or NGOs, and that they raise funds through events and activities.
“When a wounded animal arrives the cost of medical attention is high, and even more if we are talking about wild fauna, because there are very few specialists and they charge high prices for their work. We have the support of some veterinarians, but in the end, they also have to make a living, ” she said.
The activist stated that the process of rehabilitation of a bird is more complicated and different from a dog or cat, because they are not domestic. “They go through a tough stress period from the moment you pick them up until you let set them free.”
As for parrots, he pointed out that they can not be released after being living with humans, because they are not capable to survive in the wild when they are used to be fed by humans; so the strategy is to have them in captivity only for reproduction purposes.
In addition, the new-born need to be fed by their parents.
