“Given the high demand and interest that citizens have to attend workshops or Maya language classes, managers and staff of the Municipal Academy of the Maya Language work on a project to implement a web portal that could offer online classes to learn the language”, informed the deputy director of Education of the Directorate of Human Development of Mérida, Alejandro Novelo Rivero.
“We are working on an initiative that will allow us to transmit the knowledge of the Mayan language to more and more people through a project that offers online lessons and classes by means of a web portal that soon will be launched by the City Council”, Novelo Rivero said.
“We are exploring the ways in which we would implement this online tool for the dissemination of the Maya culture.”
He said that the municipal office has received several requests from people interested in taking Maya lessons, but so far these can only be taken at the academy.
Currently the academy offers Maya language classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 PM; Wednesdays and Fridays, from 6 to 8 PM, and Saturdays from 8 AM. to 12 PM.
