The only Psycho-pedagogical and Re-education Center for Men in Mérida that was created in 2007 and that was relocated in Colonia Juan Pablo II recently, has provided attention to approximately 1,000 men so far this year, in order to eradicate their violent behavior towards women, in addition, at least 100 new users have been integrated.
The professor in applied psychology, Edy Raúl Sansores Solís, accompanied by the clinical psychologist, Julio Trejo Hernández, said that there is good response, as men voluntarily approach the place. In addition, several of them arrive after being sent from institutions such as the Superior Court of Justice of Yucatan or the Attorney General Office for the Defense of Minors and the Family (Prodemefa).
“We have had a good response, because we receive people both voluntarily and sent by government institutions; those who approach volutarily, in many cases, have the best chances of good improvement in terms of the eradication of violent behavior, “said the interviewee.
“Every week, the organization provides service to 15 new people and around 30 receive attention,” explained Sansores Solis.
The center, in order to reach more users who wish to learn to live without violence, is conducting talks in schools and public and private institutes; In addition, they provide support for individual and group therapy and reflective groups as well.
For its part, Israel Gamboa Aguayo, coordinator of the center, said that after the situations of violence against women and the recent “gender alert” situation in the state (which was not activated), “the Government of Yucatán intends to focus in this issue, looks after these violent individuals, works with them and rehabilitate them. ”
It is worth mentioning that there is an inter-institutional network for men who exercise gender violence and it helps to make the legal and therapeutic processes more agile and faster. It also works hand in hand with the Psychiatry Institute and the IPM care center.
