Mexico, Aug. 2 (Notimex).- In order to promote the creation of networks for the defense of the territory of communities and cultures, the First North-South Conference of Degrowth will take place from September 3 to 7 in Mexico City.
The spokesman of the event, Miguel Valencia, considered necessary to review what is really sought with the growth of the economy, since it only benefits the most privileged and harms the poorest.
At a press conference, he explained that everything has a natural cycle that reaches its climax, and the economy is not the exception, so making it grow “has a perverse purpose that only benefits the big transnationals that have infinite ambitions.”
Valencia said then that the problem to reduce poverty is not fighting with strategies limited to this sector,” but ending with the wealth of those who have more.”
He explained that the conference will bring together members of the various international national movements that fight against climate, ecological, cultural, social, economic, political and symbolic devastation.
The event is structured with plenary sessions, special sessions, presentations and coexistence of activities. 132 individual papers from more than 50 countries were received and 86 will be presented at the conference.
The event is an initiative of autonomous ecologists and has as motto the “decolonization of social imaginary”, in the face of the devastation of goals of children created in schools, the manipulation of desires produced by the media and the degradation of the social imaginary for the consumption of everyday life.
Miguel Valencia explained that conferences of this type are held regularly in Europe and Canada; However, for the first time, Mexico there will be a forum to present the latest in the world in the thinking and practice of economic degrowth and to put it in dialogue with the context of the new international situation.
“With this conference Mexico stands as a pioneer among the countries of the global South in the debate against the perverse effects of unlimited economic growth,” said Valencia.
