Activists demand electric carriages in Mérida to stop animal abuse

Outraged by the bad conditions of the horses that pull the carriages in Mérida’s Historic Center, members of the civil society are organizing a peaceful demonstration to demand a halt to the exploitation of these poor animals.

Calesas yes, but electric ones!” Reads the invitation to the event that will take place on Saturday, September 22, starting at 5:00 p.m., and until 7:00 p.m., at the Plaza Grande of the Yucatecan capital.

The protest, organized by VEGAN Yucatán, aims to raise awareness among the local society of the importance to care for these horses, since they are exposed to the extreme heat, hard rain and long working hours.

“The purpose is to raise our voices for these horses that are being mistreated, and make a call on the competent authorities to do something about it,” the activists declared through Facebook.

To do this, the animalists ask those interested to attend with placards and informative posters, as well as devices to project a video that they have prepared for the occasion. Similarly, they will have information tables and collect signatures to later submit a bill before the local Congress.

Currently there are cities that have taken the initiative to prohibit the use of horses as a means of trawling, as in Guadalajara, where they have electric carriages to avoid animal abuse.
