At the end of the summer holiday period, the shops, restaurants, hotels and self-service stores affiliated with the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Canaco-Servytur) of Mérida, had a break in their economy with an economic benefit of 3.4 billion pesos, the business entity indicated through a bulletin.

The president of the Canaco Mérida, Michel Salum Francis, explained that this results in an increase of five percent, compared to the same period of 2017.

As every year, he said, the site with the highest concentration of people was Progreso, where it is estimated that more than 400,000 people visited this destination during the summer, who boosted the economy of that port and left behind a considerable economic spill.

“The Yucatan coast, from Celestún to Progreso, Chelem, Telchac, Chicxulub, Uaymitún, San Crisanto, Santa Clara and Dzilam Bravo among others, were the most visited sites, as local families and from other parts of Mexico sought the sun, sand and sea, as well as the gastronomy to spend a pleasant holiday”, said Salum Francis.

According to preliminary figures associated with this business chamber, some establishments managed to increase their sales by 50%, and some by 100% during the last week of the summer vacation period.

“Undoubtedly, the main sectors that received the greatest economic benefit are the restaurants and hotels, since some of these businesses increased their sales by up to 100%, and many lodging centers reported an occupation of more than 90%” Salum said.

Michel Salum pointed out that not only beach destinations had good demand during these summer vacations, since the tourist sites of Yucatan, such as Magical Towns, colonial cities, archaeological zones and ecotourism sites, had a very important influx of tourists, which is attributed to the good promotion that the government and private initiative makes of these attractions.

For its part the Municipal Police of Mérida assured that it successfully completed its public security and highway safety operations implemented during this holiday period, reporting the detention of 922 people for different faults.

The period in question began on Saturday, July 7 and ended on Sunday August 26, a period in which there were 736 arrests for disturbance on public roads, 54 for driving while intoxicated, 26 for theft to trade, 20 for theft to passerby, one for vehicle theft, and one more for theft of vehicle accessories.

As a result of the operations implemented by the Canine Unit in the points of greatest concentration of people allowed the arrest of Sindy Severiana H., for possible criminal acts, because she was found in possession of a 32-caliber pistol and 49 useful cartridges.

In the same way, the agents of the Canine Unit detianed J.L.M.K. at the CAME bus station in Merida, who was carrying a suitcase with approximately 10 kilos of marijuana.

The surveillance work implemented by this corporation, allowed the arrest of five people who were painting graffiti on the walls of different businesses on Calle 59 between 56 and 58, downtown Mérida.

The team of paramedical agents gave attention to a total of 516 people, among the main causes stand out: heat strokes, falls, traffic accidents, epileptic attacks, nervous breakdowns, physical aggressions and cuts.

In this way, the Municipal Police concluded the holiday season operation, thanking the citizens for their civic behavior, which allowed the vacation period to conclude without any major incidents.
