Students of the Automotive Mechanics degree, from the Technological University of Mayab (UTM), obtained one of the first places in a contest of the Youth Self-Employment Promotion program, carried out by the Youth Secretariat (Secretaría de la Juventud: Sejuve).

The students presented a project that consists of a new type of fuel that can replace diesel.

The group of students obtained an incentive of $ 75,000 pesos due to the innovativeness of the project and the viability it has to become reality. The resource they were given is so they can carry out the project and make it happen.

The students won the prize, which consists of financial counseling and support for young entrepreneurs who wish to develop a project or business, regardless of whether or not they are college students.

The project of the UTM students is called “Biosurmex” and began to be developed more than a year ago by Ángel Javier Villanueva Chan, a student of Automotive Mechanics, and a team of colleagues.

“Biosurmex” is a biofuel with characteristics identical to diesel, which is produced from burned edible oil mixed with ethanol and other chemical elements.

Professor José Guadalupe Moo Xix, mentor of the course and advisor of this group of students, informed that this compound could substitute fossil fuel for internal combustion equipment and mechanical equipment such as trucks, cranes, buses, compressors, shapers, forklifts, among others.

The winning students first participated in an internal contest at the university on April 24, in which 13 projects competed. In this first phase, Sejuve staff attended as part of the jury to decide who would be the representative of the campus.

In the second phase of the contest, which took place in August at the Yucatecan Institute of Entrepreneurs (IYEM) of Mérida, more than 50 participating teams attended with different types of projects.

As part of that second phase, the youth took training courses and workshops on productive activities, opportunity areas, business skills and business plans.

Finally, on August 22, the final part of the contest was held, where the participants had to explain what the projects consist of and they acted as well-known jury of state businessmen.

It was in this final stage, where the students obtained the  75,000,000 pesos as the winners of the contest.
