Cancun, Q.R. — Aeromexico has added a new international destination with the inaugural Cancun-Medellín flight which landed at the Cancun International Airport for the first time Saturday.

The flight was met by officials including Carlos Trueba Coll, Director of the Cancun International Airport, Paul Verhagen, director of international sales at Aeromexico, María Fernanda Grueso, Consul General of Colombia, Darío Flota, head of Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo and Luis de Potestad, undersecretary of Tourism.

Carlos Trueba says that the landing of the first flight for the new route was a special day since the flight joined the two countries that have much in common.

It is also of particular importance, he added because, “The airport of Cancún, with that of Medellín, is an airport that this year began to operate through our international partner Airplan, which has the concession to operate the José María Córdova International Airport in Medellín.”

Paul Verhagen, commercial director of Aeromexico said that it was a special moment for the airline to arrive from its second international destination.

“This was almost an obligation since the Colombian market is very important for Quintana Roo. Colombians are the fourth most important market in the region and there was no direct connection between Medellín and Cancún, so it complements perfectly with all the flights we have from Cancun to Mexico City,” he said.

“Two weeks ago we opened Mexico City-Punta Cana, last week we opened Mexico City-Berlin; Mexico City- (Berlor) Costa Rica and today we inaugurate two. Cancun-Medellin and also Mexico City-Belize,” he explained.

Luis de Potestad, undersecretary of Tourism says that since 2017, Quintana Roo has since a 14 percent increase in Colombian travelers who spend an average vacation of six nights in the region. The new direct flight is available until April 28, 2019, however, officials are considering offering the new route year-round.
