The Secretary of Economic Development of the State, Ernesto Herrera Novelo, reported that one of the main projects of the current administration is to expand the dredging of the port of Progreso depth to 12 meters, in order to able to receive larger cruises and have greater cargo handling capacity.

“The official said that currently the dredging of this site is approximately 9.50 meters deep, which creates significant limitations on the size of cruise ships and cargo vessels arriving in Progreso, the main port of the state”, according to Notimex.

“By having a greater draft, not only can we receive larger cruises, but also ships with greater cargo capacity, so the current administration will seek to achieve this goal, and make the draft reach a depth of 12 meters,” he said.

In recent days there was a meeting in Florida, United States, between Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal, and the representatives of the main cruise companies and one of the issues was precisely the dredging of the cruise terminal.

“If we want the tourism and industrial sectors to continue to grow in Yucatan, as well as the services and exports industries, we need to enhance the capacity of our main port, in order to make it more competitive and better prepared for the economic growth that the state is already experiencing,” the official stated.

Ernesto Herrera Novelo declared that the Cervecería Yucateca brewing company alone, already warned that next year it expects to export more than 40,000 containers, 20,000 more than this year, for this reason the need to strengthen, expand and modernize the capabilities of the port of Progreso is absolutely vital.
