Last weekend the airport of Merida registered record figures, and it is foreseen that the number of visitors will reach its highest peak at the end of December.
The administrator of the “Manuel Crescencio Rejón” Mérida International Airport, Óscar Carrillo Maldonado, estimated that the flow of passengers increased last week to seven thousand passengers per day.
He added that since the beginning of December the air terminal has registered a large number of arrivals for the holidays, as well as local residents who go on vacation to other destinations.
He said that flights have reached 100 percent occupancy, so surely this year will close with an increase of up to 14% of what was recorded last year, when the airport received 2,200,000 people. A total of 2, 500, 000 travelers is expected this year.

Carrillo Maldonado said that the airport performs, on average, 120 business operations per day, and underlined that airlines opted to use aircraft with more seats in their flights to the state capital.
He recalled that during the first days of the month the occupation has oscillated between 75 and 80 percent, which he said “is a very good figure, taking into account that these are larger planes”.
In addition, he stressed that the city’s airport records an annual growth above the world average.
“Air connectivity grew significantly this year with new flights to national and international destinations” he concluded.
