PLAYA DEL CARMEN, QUINTANA ROO.- Hitmen carried out an execution at bar “Las Virginias” in Playa’s Villas del Sol neighborhood, leaving seven people dead.
On Sunday, January 6, at eight o’clock in the evening, two gunmen ran into this place, located at the corner of Avenida Gavilanes and Calle Pavo Real, in the Villas del Sol neighborhood, and opened fire with long weapons.
According to witnesses, several blasts were heard, followed by individual shots. Then, the suspects got into a vehicle that was waiting for them outside the premises and escaped at high speed.
Minutes later, Municipal and State Police officers arrived on site.
The General Prosecutor’s Office in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo announced that six people lost their lives at the scene and a seventh died at the hospital.
It has been discarded that there are any tourists among the victims of this massive execution, which took place in a low income, non-touristic neighborhood of this destination.
This tragic event reminded the people of Quintana Roo of the shooting that took place on January 16, 2017 at the popular Blue Parrot nightclub, which left six dead and fifteen wounded in Playa del Carmen during an electronic music festival, due to a dispute between drug dealers.
Unlike the Blue Parrot, located in the hotel and restaurant area, this establishment was located on the outskirts of the city and was frequented mostly by residents of the town.
Since 2017, violence has spread to a large part of the southeastern state of Quintana Roo, allegedly as a consequence of the dispute between the Jalisco Nueva Generación and Los Zetas drug cartels for the control the region.
