The price for obtaining a driver’s license in Yucatan will be reduced starting today, Friday February 1st.
In addition, housewives, students with scholarship and unemployed people who require a license in order to obtain a job, will have access to free driver’s licenses. There will also be 50% discounts, according to Decree 37/2019, published on the Official Gazette of the Government of the State of Yucatan.
According to the decree, the following individuals are exempt from the payment of fees for driver’s licenses, valid for two years, and permits to drive vehicles in Yucatan.
- – Housewives without a fixed financial remuneration and who lack another source of income.
- – Students from public or private schools who have a scholarship granted by an official agency.
- – Unemployed people who live in Yucatan and require a driver’s license to get a job.
In addition, a 50% discount will be granted to workers, salaried or not, retired and pensioners, who “receive on average daily up to the equivalent of four and a half units of measurement and updating (UMA)”, meaning that they earn less than 380 pesos per day.
This decree also considers the reduction of the UMA value. For example, during 2018, the price for a motorist license valid for two years was 483.60 pesos (6 UMAS of 80.60 pesos each); and now it’s 422.45 pesos, that is, 5 UMAS with the price of 2019 (84.49 pesos each). The driver’s license for the same period went from 564.20 pesos to 506.94 and a motorcyclist’s license from 241.80 to 168.98 pesos.
Requirements to have a free driver’s license
In order to have a free driver’s license, the requirement for housewives is to present a proof of their profession, issued by the Management and Orientation Unit of the Governor’s Office or by the System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF-Yucatán).
In the case of the unemployed people, the certificate issued by the National Employment Service, Yucatan, certifying their status as unemployed and the written document signed by the individual or contracting company which requires them a driver’s license. In the case of students, a certificate of valid studies and the document that certifies being the beneficiary of a scholarship.
Proof of income
For 50% discounts, workers must submit proof of enrollment to the social security system to which they belong and the last payroll receipt or proof of income issued by the employer. For non-salaried workers, a certificate from the trade union or cooperative group to which they belong is requested. Retirees must show a document proving their status and receipt of the last payment of their pension.
Last year, there was a similar decree for 50% discounts and free licenses for housewives and students. But this year, the reduction of a the UMA unit, has repercussions in all the prices in general.
