“Merida stands out nationally in the issue of security and this has much to do with the crime preventive programs that the City Council has set in motion, together with citizen participation and good coordination between the three levels of government,” assured Mayor Renán Barrera Concha during his speech at the Extraordinary Session of the National Municipal Public Safety Conference.

In the session, held at the facilities of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico City, Renan Barrera exchanged point of views with the Secretary of Security of the Federal Government, Alfonso Durazo who acknowledged the good results of the Municipal Police of Mérida.

After the intervention of the Merida mayor, the Federal Secretary remarked that these safety indicators are the result of good comprehensive work by the City Council in terms of prevention, care, shelter and surveillance.

Renán Barrera stressed the importance of maintaining security as the guiding axis for his public policies, in order to safeguard the integrity and assets of those who live in Mérida.

In said event, he indicated that part of these successful cases has been achieved thanks to the resources of the program for the Strengthening of Security (FORTASEG), which has allowed Mérida to remain as a reference in terms of security for the rest of Mexico. As these resources are allocated to development, professionalization and certification of the municipal police, as well as in technology, infrastructure and equipment to support the police operations and its coordination with other instances of public order.

-We consider that solving the problems of insecurity in the country is possible with the strengthening of municipal police forces, as this is the type of police closest to the citizen and that focuses on maintaining the order of daily life in our cities- Durazo stated.

He emphasized that the application of programs is necessary for the benefit of the inhabitants of each and every municipality and community in Mexico.

Barrera Concha expressed that the decisions made in the Executive Secretariat of the National Municipal Public Security System are for the good of Mexico and allow the consolidation of new security strategies to strengthen the Federal, State, Ministerial and the Municipal Police forces, within the coordination framework of the National Public Security System.

The Yucatecan mayor recalled that since his first administration in 2012-2015, the City Council has worked tirelessly to be the best city in the country in matters of Public Safety, which allows citizens to live safe, with respect to their heritage and enjoying a healthy environment.

In this regard, he indicated that during the period 2007-2010, when he was a councilor of the Merida City Council, he requested the application of the D.A.R.E. (Drugs Abuse Resistense Education) to bring preventive education to schools against drug use and violence.

He explained that this program has been the backbone in the cross-application of other complementary projects such as “DARE Athletic Days”, “You decide”, “School Wardens”, “School Visits”, “Pennant Road”, “Preventing Crime”, among others.

-Merida is the result of an adequate process in preventive strategy of crime in all of its forms, with programs in schools, work centers and at home, “he said.

Barrera Concha said that he has always kept constant coordination with the Public Security authorities of the State of Yucatan, to build a city and a state where citizens live in harmony.

“In Mérida, we privilege citizen participation in the prevention of crime and we carry out joint actions between society and government for the benefit of all”.

It is worth mentioning that the Municipal Public Safety Conference is the governing body that outlines the municipal public security institutional strategies mainly in the degree of prevention.
