Despite being 80 years old, Mr. Alejandro Pech Huchim continues in the craft of masonry.
Originally from the town of Huhí, Yucatán; he was brought to Mérida at an early age. His father took him as an assistant to carry water at the construction sites. And at the age of 11 he was already a mason’s assistant. The man participated in construction works such as the first wall of the Mérida airport, the first silo of Cemex, the plant of Cervecería Yucateca, Cordelería de Mayapán and the Technological Institute of Mérida, just to name a few.
Along his career he was also in charge of construction work projects at subdivisions in the west side of Merida.
“None of my children wanted to be a bricklayer, but they all ended up learning the trade, so sometimes they help me in my jobs,” says Pech Huchim, who was married to Mrs. Flora Maria Puc Pool (may she rest in peace) and they had six children, three boys and three girls.
One of the hobbies of Mr. Alejandro Pech Huchim is cooking, one of his favorite stews is “Mondongo Kabic“.
When asked about any accidents during his career, Pech Huchim replied that, on certain occasion, a construction block fell on his head, for which he had to be hospitalized for several days.
