People with disabilities who live in Mérida will have free transportation service to attend medical appointments or therapies, on specially adapted vehicles to serve this sector of the population, thanks to the Program of Transportation of Persons with Motor Disabilities (Programa de Transporte de Personas con Discapacidad Motriz), that was officially launched by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal on Wednesday April 24th.
State authorities seek to benefit this sector, which corresponds to 6.5% of the total population of the state, especially those with a motor disability.
This initiative, which represents an important benefit for low income Yucatecan citizens, will make approximately 35 trips a day, in 5 totally adapted vehicles, property of the AsiTaxi company. In order to provide a comfortable and safe transfer for a passenger in a wheelchair and a companion.
“This is an important step, because one of the most common problems for these citizens are: first, the lack of economic resources for taxi cabs, and second, the great difficulty that represents for them to move around in public transportation buses that are not properly adapted for people with disabilities, which is why the state government is offering them this important help “, governor Mauricio Vila Dosal said.
