The president of the Yucatan Porcine Growers Association, Carlos Ramayo Navarrte, declared that Yucatán is one of the Mexican states with the largest export of pork to the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Chile and China, and it is expected to open more international markets this year, which will increase meat production and job creation.
He said that for years they have exported pork meat to South Korea and Japan, but last year they started sending their product to the United States, Canada and Chile; and they are back in China where the market was closed in 2018 due to a problem of swine fever, but thanks to good work of the Association, the Yucatecan product is back in that country.
He pointed out that the production is going well, there are more than 420 pig farms operating in the State, and employment increased from 8 thousand to 12 thousand, last year the production was of 2,200,000 pigs and they expect to close 2019 with 2,400,000 animals.
He mentioned that the production of pigs is going well, the production of meat is going well, as well as the phytosanitary booths are working for the proper control in livestock production; so they continue working with great intensity and the pork meat market is self suffcient in Yucatan. The state is fourth national place in the production of pork meat.
He added that during Lent in March and Easter in April, consumption of pork has not decreased, it is still of great demand among Yucatecan people, besides, food prices are stable in the local market, There have not been increases, and the important thing is that neither high temperatures have affected the pork production in the region.
