Larger cruises are not bringing more tourists to Progreso, Yucatán

Although the average number of passengers per cruise has increased by just over 6 percent, from 2,837 in 2018. to 3,016 in 2019; from January to May thisyear only 165,889 passengers have arrived to Progreso, compared to 218,481 during the same period last year.

Six new shipping companies will be arriving in Yucatán this year, one of them is Carnival, which continues with its scheduled arrivals but in a larger ship, because instead of the Carnival Conquest with 2,754 passengers and 1,100 crew members, now they’re bringing the Carnival Sunrise with 4,555 passengers and 1,300 crew members.

However, according to official information from Sectur, the number of cruise ships that arrived at the port of Progreso from January to May this year, also decreased compared to 2018 (77 ships arrived last year and only 55 this year in the same period of time).

Finally, Sectur stated that up to date, Progreso, Yucatán has welcome 200 thousand tourists arriving in 64 cruises.
