Mototaxis: the most dangerous means of public transportation in Mérida

During the first half of the year, the motorcycle taxi became the public transport vehicle for passengers with the highest number of traffic accidents, with a growth rate of over 30 percent compared to the figure registered during the same period in 2018.

It is the type of vehicle with the highest number of road accidents, in which 11 people have lost their lives.

Based on the information provided by the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), in the first six months of 2019, 312 traffic accidents were registered in Yucatan, in which drivers of emergency units are involved. Also public transport of passengers vehicles, problem that decreased by 6.3 percent with respect to the same period in the previous year (333).

Besides, there were 362 people injured and treated by paramedics, with a decrease of 1.6 percent over the same period last year (368), of which only a small percentage were transferred and admitted to clinics and / or hospitals, both public and private .

Unfortunately, there were 10 road accidents, which claimed the lives of 10 people, a figure that is 26.7 percent lower than that registered in the first six months of 2018, when 15 were killed.

Out of the total number of people killed, four were pedestrians, three motorists, two passengers and two motorcyclists.

According to the statistics provided, 341 drivers of public passenger transport units were involved in the incidents, of which 106 are motorcycle taxi drivers (Mototaxis), 89 bus operators, 86 urban taxi drivers, 32 foreign taxi drivers, 24 collective guiders, two tricitaxistas and two horse carriage drivers.
