Several trees that used to be proudly lined along Avenida Cupules will be transplanted, while others will remain in their place; and according to the City of Mérida, only one was cut down.

By disposition of the Sustainable Development Unit of the City Council of Mérida, out of the 17 trees along 70 meters in front of the property number 79 on Avenida Cupules (between Calles 6 and Calle 8) Colonia Dolores Patron; nine will be transplanted inside the property, seven will remain in their original place and one was demolished as it was already dead.

Some of the specimens that will be relocated have already been pruned to facilitate their transfer. Also in several cases, the earth was removed to transplant the trees. Some of these trees are more than 15 meters (50 feet) high and their foliage crossed the avenue from side to side.

The property’s wall was previously demolished to facilitate the construction works of this new Gulf gas station. Inside the property, along with the 17 trees in question, there are at least four palm trees of different sizes and two other trees, which fate has not been determined yet.

Municipal authorities highlighted the fact that the foliage of some of these trees, were dangerously embracing the electrical wiring network and that’s why they needed to be relocated.
