To comply with the AMLO government’s austerity policies, Mexico’s Secretariat of Economy will close representations in Belgium, Canada, China, France, Japan and Uruguay.
Through a statement, the agency informed that the closure will take place no later than October 31st this year, in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Law on Republican Austerity promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“The foregoing, in accordance with the provisions of articles 3, second paragraph and 55 of the Internal Regulations of the Secretariat of Economy. For this, they must carry out the necessary actions that allow an orderly closure and in strict adherence to the applicable regulations, ”indicates the document signed by the Federal Economy Secretary, Graciela Márquez Colín.
When closing these commercial representations, the Economy Secretriat would be left with only two venues: one in Geneva, Switzerland and the other in Washington D.C, United States.
In the statement they also announce the repatriation of their staff no later than October 31st, 2019.
Julio Rodríguez, National Vice President of Foreign Trade and International Affairs considered that this measure is contradictory with the message of “market diversification” that was supposed to be promoted by the Mexican government.
“The so-called “market diversification” promoted by the government couldn’t be farther away from the reality dictated by the Federal Law of Republican Austerity and the consequent closing of international commercial representations. Is this how we want to stop relying on the North American market?” Julio Rodríguez tweeted.
